Is there anything someone put out into the world that really means a lot to you but hasn't stood the test of time? Like a product released that just didn't hit it off. I could think of numerous toys, games, collectibles, etc that either tried to be their own thing (whether fully or to bring something new to the table for their trend) or blatantly copied something. Or maybe it had a good run but their production eventually ended. It doesn't even have to be a franchise. Maybe there's a character, story, or world someone created and shared that you think is really cool. I'm just interested to hear praises for those types of things that still mean a lot to you.
One of the biggest for me is Monster Rancher. It is one of what I consider my trifecta for monster raising games (a genre I absolutely fell in love with back in the late 90s and earlyish 2000s). I still hold so much respect for the anime and a fair amount for the various merchandise (my Monster Rancher figures that came packaged with at least one mystery monster is among my all time favorite toys I would look out for). I absolutely love Monster Rancher 2 and will still go back and play it on my ps2 and is one of a handful of ps(2) games that I give that honor to (even if I don't play them so much as of late and for the last couple years or so). It is my favorite game because I feel it's the closest to the world I was first introduced to via the anime (a common thread the other two games in the trifecta, Pokémon and Digimon, also had; since getting into Yokai Watch the trifecta is bordering on becoming a quadfecta). I also respect Monster Rancher 1 as well as the Advanced games, but 1 is sorta a downgrade to me since I started with 2 (it still stays close to the version the anime portrays) and the Advanced games didn't have the wondrous details the ability to mix monsters gave (just different colorings) which I assume is because of being on a handheld game. 3 removed the main and sub (the main was the monsters basic form and the sub was the unique things it got added based on the monster who was the sub) formula and replaced the differences being based on locations. Some still could pass as an old main/sub but it wasn't the same thing, not to mention some monsters were redesigned. It worked for the jell species because it gave a reason for their lack of a humanoid upper body, but golems and plants were just changed without that. 4 brought back the main/sub formula but just like how Pokémon's gen 3 introduction cut us off from connecting to gen 1&2 and restricting us from using certain 'mons all together until the other gen 3 handheld and consoles games came out, a fair amount of monsters didn't come back. This wasn't completely new as MR2 was missing some monsters from MR1 (although the lands MR1 and 2 took place in were different so that was sort of a reasoning and I believe all missing monsters made some sort of cameo in MR2 anyway such as magics being rumored to be inside monols and galis as well as basically being a ??? sub for the new humanoid magic user, doodles appearing as graffiti on certain monols, and disks being a ??? sub for the new ammonite monster niton) and the Advanced games and 3 did as well (but that was, imo, the least problematic thing MR3 changed), but considering my fav monster at the time was mia it put me off really getting into my copy of MR4. Then there's EVO which I feel like most, if not all, MR fans didn't like as it changed raising and battling to being a part of a circus. I didn't really give that one a chance after knowing the basics of that game. Aside from spin-offs and an mmo (which I'm not entirely sure came out at all or just in Japan) there's still Monster Rancher DS. While writing this out so far I have become openminded in going back and playing 3 and 4 (I can use monsters I approve of as well as considering the different location forms ??? subs when it comes to 3), but DS I've written off. For a handheld MR game they did bring back the details the Advanced games lacked, but I don't think they stayed true to established ones from the past. They also had a monster generating system that I think I remember as being flawed. As I recall there was a way to manipulate it and after finding that out it made it seem less magical and fun.
Now I'm interested to hear about franchises and stuff that really made an impact on you.
